Orientation Booklets to Welcome Families with Care

As Belmont Christian College prepared for a new intake of Prep and Kindergarten families, the team recognised a gap. They offered strong on-site care and relationship-building, yet the first days of school often brought predictable anxiety for parents and children. The College needed a tactile, thoughtful orientation resource that felt like an extension of the community itself.

  • The Challenge

Orientation materials often drift into two extremes: overly functional checklists or internal 'fun' pieces that feel cheap and tacky. Families required clarity on practical details such as times, routines, and what to bring. Yet they also needed reassurance, warmth, and a sense of belonging - that which comes from high quality design. The booklet had to carry both the emotional and practical Jobs-to-Be-Done, without overwhelming parents at a vulnerable moment.

  • What We Noticed

Early years parents crave two things: confidence that they are prepared, and trust that their child will be known and cared for. BCC's culture already delivers this through strong relationships, but the communication materials did not yet mirror that experience. The opportunity was to create a resource that reduced cognitive load, offered clear next steps, and introduced the teaching teams and learning rhythms in a gentle, human way.

  • The Solution

Working closely with the Director of Mission and Community and the Prep and Kindergarten teams, we designed two orientation booklets that felt like a warm welcome rather than an instruction manual. Each booklet integrated the practical and emotional jobs. Families received clear guidance on routines, preparation, and expectations, paired with introductions to teachers, insights into learning environments, and explanations of daily rhythms. Beautiful photography brought the spaces and relationships to life. We printed on textured uncoated stock to create a tactile, honest feel that matched the college’s relational culture. The result was a resource that parents described as calming, reassuring, and surprisingly personal.

  • The Impact

The booklets have become a core part of the onboarding experience. Teachers see families arriving with clearer expectations and stronger connection. The College now has an orientation resource that reflects its identity and supports families through a significant transition.

  • The Lesson

Onboarding is not exclusively an information transfer. It is about reducing anxiety, creating connection, and helping families feel held as they enter school life. When design starts with empathy, even a simple booklet becomes an experience.
